Volunteer EMS Opportunities for the 2008 Spiedie Fest and Balloon Rally

As you probably know by now, the Spiedie Fest and Balloon Rally, one of Broome County’s premier family fun events, will return to Otsiningo Park on August 1, 2, and 3. We are very proud and excited to once again host this event at one of our outstanding County park facilities.

One of the most important support services needed to ensure a safe and healthy public event is adequate EMS coverage. While on-site ambulance coverage will be provided, additional EMS personnel are needed to staff the Emergency Healthcare Facility (first aid station), “Gator” patrols, and walking posts. Due to the expected high crowd density, we anticipate the need for a substantial number of EMS volunteers.

Please refer to the Events Schedule for the Spiedie Fest and Balloon Rally, found in the packet attached In PDF (Adobe) fomat. Recent updates are available on-line at http://www.spiediefest.com/. Also in the attached packet, please find an EMS Volunteer Application form. Please use this form to sign up to volunteer for the Spiedie Fest, noting your day and time commitment(s) to provide EMS coverage.

While providing EMS coverage at the Spiedie Fest, you are asked to wear your agency’s EMS uniform (tee shirts or golf shirts are fine), or a “generic” EMS shirt if your agency does not approve of this use of its uniform. You must also wear your Regional EMS provider photo ID badge (please contact me if you need to obtain or to update this).

Since only a few short weeks remain before the Spiedie Fest, we ask that you return your Volunteer Application Form as soon as possible. The applications are pre-addressed on the reverse side. Simply re-fold, tape or staple closed, and affix postage. Alternately, you can FAX your completed application to my attention at (607) 778-6601.

During the days preceding the Spiedie Fest, you will receive a confirmation letter listing the date(s) and time(s) to which you have been assigned, and advising you where to park and report.

Please do not miss out on this opportunity to participate in what is sure to be a very memorable event! Please contact me at (607) 778-2184 with any questions you may have in this matter.

Thank you, in advance, for your kind attention and assistance in this important matter.

Health Insurance for Volunteer Emergency Service Personel Bill

As you may recall a few years ago the Legislature required that a Task Force be named to look into the issue of providing Health Insurance as a potential incentive for recruitment and retention of personnel. Mike Mastrianni, Jr., President of the NYS Volunteer Ambulance & Rescue Association, along with the President of FASNY and others served on the Task Force. Regratably, while a report with recommendations was issued, the previous administartion never released the report.

However, there has been some movement on the issue. Last week, the New York State Legislature passed a legislation that makes the 100,000 volunteer firefighters and 30,000 volunteer EMS personnel statewide eligible to purchase low-cost health insurance using their own funds.

This bill was spearheaded by FASNY as an effort to address the dual challenges of recruitment and retention. These are topics that we (NYSVARA) have been working with them and other provider groups on for some time. The health insurance bills, Assembly bill A7699 (sponsored by Assembly Member RoAnn Destito) and Senate bill S4617 (sponsored by Senator James Seward), now go to the Governor’s desk to be signed.

This is an important step in the process of beginning to address these critical issues. Allowing potential and existing volunteers the opportunity to buy the same insurance coverage as their municipal counterparts will serve as an incentive for these men and women to join – and, more importantly, stay with – their local fire and EMS departments. This in turn will keep our communities stronger and safer. It should also be noted that this new law will not cost the state or local governments anything, since volunteers would be using their own funds to purchase coverage.

Please let Governor Paterson know how important this bill is to the volunteer EMS service and to the communities we serve. Please call the Governor’s Office at (518) 474-8390 or visit www.ny.gov/governor/contact/index.html to send him an email. Together, we can ensure that this important bill is signed into law.
